Bigham’s Smokehouse Celebrates Father’s Day by Honoring the Family Legacy That Started It All
The longtime Lubbock BBQ restaurant Bighams Smokehouse reflects on family, fatherhood, and nearly five decades of serving West Texas barbecue.
This Father’s Day, Bigham’s Smokehouse is celebrating more than great barbecue. The longtime Lubbock BBQ restaurant is honoring the father, founder, and family legacy behind one of the city’s most recognizable BBQ names.
Bigham’s Smokehouse was founded in 1978 by Don Bigham, a Texas Tech graduate who came to Lubbock for school and quickly fell in love with the community. After recognizing a need for an affordable, high-quality BBQ restaurant that matched the vision he had in mind, Don opened the first Bigham’s location and dedicated the next 17 years of his life to smoking meats, serving customers, and building a restaurant Lubbock families could call their own.

Don’s life was tragically cut short in a car accident in 1995, but the legacy he started did not end there. His son, Nick Bigham, continued the family business, carrying forward the same commitment to great food, warm service, and authentic West Texas barbecue.
Today, Bigham’s Smokehouse has grown to three convenient locations across Lubbock, continuing to serve the same community Don loved so much.
A Father’s Day Tribute Rooted in Family and Barbecue
Father’s Day holds special meaning for the Bigham family. It is a time to remember Don’s vision, celebrate the business he built, and recognize the next generation of fatherhood through Nick, who now carries the Bigham name and legacy forward.
“Bigham’s has always been more than a restaurant,” said the Bigham family. “It’s part of our family story, and it’s part of Lubbock’s story. Father’s Day gives us a special opportunity to honor Don, remember where this all started, and celebrate the families who continue to gather around our food.”
For many Lubbock families, barbecue is already part of Father’s Day tradition. Whether it is brisket, ribs, sausage, pulled pork, or classic sides, Bigham’s Smokehouse offers a familiar and meaningful way to celebrate dads, grandfathers, and father figures across West Texas.
The restaurant encourages families to make Bigham’s part of their Father’s Day plans, whether dining in, picking up a meal, or ordering barbecue for a family gathering.
Nearly five decades after Don Bigham opened the first restaurant, Bigham’s Smokehouse remains rooted in the same values: good food, hard work, family, and love for the Lubbock community.
