Temple Grandin Humane Animal Handling System Adds Value to Waseda Farms Wisconsin

Waseda Farms® invited Dr. Grandin and Mark Deesing to design one of their cattle handling systems, the first in the state of Wisconsin.

Baileys Harbor, WI -- “We do everything we can to reduce the stress of the animals. That’s why we chose the Temple Grandin Handling System, designed by the world’s leading animal handling researcher, Dr. Temple Grandin.” - Tom Lutsey, Founder

In 2008, Waseda Farms® invited Dr. Temple Grandin and her team to create Wisconsin’s smallest animal handling system to reduce stress in their organic grass-fed livestock.  Grandin, a professor of animal science at Colorado State University, is a world leader in the creation of humane animal handling systems.

It may shock some to know that animals have stress, just like people. Waseda Farms® works hard to ensure that their organic and grass-fed animals are able to live a stress-free life on their farm. They believe that endorphins and adrenaline from stress adversely affect both the tenderness and flavor of the meat. The design of the system helps ensure a stress-free life.

Dr. Grandin discovered that cattle go in circles to calm themselves down. Through extensive research and the help of her custom design consultant, the Temple Grandin Handling System was designed with no corners, so they are always going in circles.  The system also has solid walls so there are no shadows, which can spook cattle.  The system also allows for just one person to safely manage and inspect the entire herd, saving time and money.

Waseda Farms® invited Dr. Grandin and Mark Deesing to design one of their cattle handling systems, the first in the state of Wisconsin, and the smallest they had ever created. Numerous universities have visited Waseda Farms to see their small scale system at work.

“The Temple Grandin Handling system was an amazing addition to the farm.  It keeps our staff safe, it allows them to efficiently check on the health of the herd, and because our cattle begin going through the chute after 5 months they are comfortable with the system later in life,” according to Matt Lutsey, President of Waseda Farms, “and making sure that our cattle are stress free, as they get older, will ensure that we have tender and delicious beef for our customers.”
